PRESCHOOL GENERAL INFORMATIONPreschool hours, applications, fees, philosophy, policies Grace Lutheran Preschool Grace Lutheran Church provides the facilities and utilities for a separate preschool program for more than 70 children, from toddlers (walking) through age 5. This self-supporting school, which serves mostly community members, strives to keep fees low and offers full/partial scholarships. Classes meet weekday mornings during the school year. For more information, please call Beth Ann Lehr at (828) 693-4972 or email gracepre@bellsouth.net.
Philosophy: Grace Lutheran Preschool creates a child-centered atmosphere to help foster learning for young children. It is our philosophy that children learn by doing. A flexible program is scheduled to allow children to work at their own level. Activities are chosen that enable your child to have experiences that will help them develop emotionally, socially, mentally, and physically. Teachers help in educating and guiding the children in a warm, loving and Christian environment. Our goal is to help the child develop a good self-concept, learn to discover, make choices, be creative, and learn to relate to others in their world. These skills will lead your child to independence.
Registration: Registration for current students, their siblings and church members takes place in February. Registration is open to the public in March. A non-refundable registration fee of $75.00 is due when a child is registered. In case of a waiting list, the fee will be due when a child is admitted to the school. Toddler Playgroup: Walking to 24 months. Two-Year-Old Playgroup: Must be 2-years-old by August 31st. The focus of the curriculum in both these classes is to develop social skills with children their own age and relationships with adults other than family. Children also experience a wide variety of activities that develop confidence, as well as, fine and large motor skills. Three-Year-Old Class: Must be 3 years old by August 31st and potty-trained or working on the completion of potty training. Our primary emphasis for the three-year-old child is a positive self-image developed through caring and sharing. Through a variety of activities, we will teach them to enhance their social skills, learn to follow directions, recognize major shapes, recognize major colors, identify their written name, refine motor skills, increase their communication skills, and increase their awareness of God's creative and sustaining love in our world. Four-Year-Old Class: Must be 4 years old by August 31st AND potty trained. The primary goal of the four-year-old class is to have the child ready for Kindergarten in such a way as to promote self-confidence and success. Through a variety of activities they will concentrate on reading readiness, math readiness, science and social studies, music and art, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, relations with others, and increasing their awareness of God in relation to their lives. Earlybirds / A.M. Program: This program is offered for the convenience of the parents who work, have early appointments, or have other children who have to be taken to school early. We offer this program from 8:00 a.m. - 8:25 a.m. for $1 per day.
"Lunch Bunch" Aftercare: On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays you may leave your child with us until 1:30 p.m. There is a registration fee of $10. The cost for each time you use the Aftercare program is $8.00 per child, regardless of how long he or she stays. Each child should bring his or her own lunch and drink.
Summer Camp: Summer Camp is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., from tJne through the middle of August. The cost is $16 per day in addition to a small registration fee. This program consists of a variety of activities that include, but are not limited to: arts and crafts, water and sand play, creative expression, group games, and quiet times.
Snacks: Your child will need to bring a snack and drink with them each day. Please send simple, nutritious snacks that can be handled easily by your child. Sweet, gooey snacks usually end up all over the child or in the trash. Good snacks include granola bars, fruit bars, yogurt, pretzels, crackers and cheese, and any kind of fruit or vegetable cut into bite-size pieces. If a thermos is used, we ask that your child drink directly from it. Juice boxes are a wonderful alternative for children.
Field Trips: Our preschool participates in field trips coordinated with the curriculum. Field trips are taken only by the 3 & 4 year-old classes. In the past field trips have included an apple orchard, pumpkin patch, grocery store, and Christmas caroling at a retirement home. Parents are welcome to attend field trips with their children.
Illness Policy: Illness, although unfortunate, is almost inevitable. Therefore, we ask that if your child has had a fever in the last 24 hours, please keep your child at home. Also, if there is a heavy nasal discharge, cough, irritability or signs of any communicable disease, please keep your child at home. If a child begins to experience any of these symptoms during the morning, we will contact you to come and get your child.
Health Immunizations: A signed health form must be turned in to the school. Usually, if there has been a recent exam, the doctor will fill out the form without any additional exam. Check with your doctor. They must sign the health form in order for it to be valid. The N. C. Health Department requires that all children have certain standard immunizations: Polio, DPT, MMR, and Tetanus. Check with your doctor to make sure your child's immunizations are up-to-date. Download Health Assessment Form (Microsoft Word) Parent Participation: Parents are ALWAYS welcome to participate in the school program in a number of ways. On special occasions we will need parent volunteers to help with parties and special projects. Parents are also encouraged to share hobbies, collections, or a skill or talent with their child's class. Some parents participate by driving for field trips, baking extra treats, helping out at open houses and so forth. Please let us know if you are willing to offer your time, talents, or interests. We will always welcome your help and participation.
